Remember field day at school when you were young? There were two groups of kids on field day. The first group came into school pumped for what they considered to be the best day of the entire school year. The other group (the one I fit in) drug themselves to school after their moms wouldn't let them skip school with fake sicknesses. Field day was never my favorite-- all the outside activities made my nose run, the bugs bit me like crazy, and I was never one to be considered athletic!
Because I'm a teacher, I still get to experience the joys of field day. I must say that this day has still not crept into the warm, fuzzy part of my heart. We had field day last Friday, and I found out that my "student" (you know who I'm talking about) felt the same way about field day as I did. The only thing she was excited about was the food that would be sold. She had brought $12.00 to spend on $0.25 candy. (Don't worry--I didn't let her spend it all!) When it came to the actual field day events, she was dreading it like the plague. At the very first event, I realized that this little girl hated field day more than I did. During a relay she ran flat over the chair at the end of the race instead of running around it. Instead of getting back up and running back to her team, she took off running down the football field towards the gate. I hollered for someone to watch my class, and there I went chasing behind her. She was bellowing, and I was running behind her screaming her name. At some point she tripped, and I was able to finally catch her. I had to pry her off the ground. The rest of the day didn't go much better. As mad as I was at her for making me chase after her, I did feel sorry for her. Field day was not her cup of tea.
One other story.... I have a group of very girly girls in my room this year. They do some of the funniest things. They have a jump rope club at recess, they wear matching outfits, and you wouldn't believe all the hair-dos. This week they did something that took the cake. They saved their cucumbers from lunch and held mini spa sessions at recess. They laid out in the pea gravel with cucumbers on their eyes! How funny is that?! It actually made me a little jealous that I couldn't lie out there with them!

I LOVE YOUR STORIES! They always make me laugh! I am glad that the day is over for you! Maybe we should have a spa day?!
I can just imagine the way Gracie felt! I never liked field day either. I loved the cucumber story.
I forgot all about field day! Aww good times! Sorry you don't share the love but I can't belive you didn't join in for spa time. We had some great times with our own little spas didn't we?
Okay, now those were good stories- even from one who's around rugrats all day too!!! I LOVE the cucumber story; that is classic. And poor little one with the relay race- that is so funny. She reminds me of Charlie Brown.
Our Field Day was great. I always scream my head off at my kids during the Tug of War, and they got pretty far this year! =) Although, I was soaked by our PE teachers and their water extinguisher.
how funny is that. i'm with you and hated field day myself. love the girls doing spa treatments. bet they say that somewhere!
