Gifts from the Heart

It happens to all of us. Someone proudly holds out a gift for you, you open it, and as you try to hide the look of shock on your face, you pull out old faithful--- the fake smile.

So it was with me last week. One of my students returned from breakfast with an outstretched hand. It was an individually wrapped banana nut muffin. I love muffins, it looked clean, and I hadn't had time for breakfast on my way out the door that morning. What a fabulous treat! I "ooed" and "ahhed," thanking my student for her thoughtfulness.

The next day, she returned from breakfast with another little gift. She proudly held up a cinnamon roll. This time it was not wrapped. As I took it from her hand and noticed the sticky film and grimy spots on her skin, out came the fake smile. I thanked her for thinking of me and deposited the gift in the trash can when the class left for activity.

Have you heard, "Three strikes, and you're out?" Here it comes....

The following day, she came in from breakfast with yet another gift. She seemed more excited about what she was bringing me today. She had hidden her treat behind her back, hoping to build excitement, I suppose. Out from behind her back she pulled a piece of sausage. Yes, sausage. She had taken the piece of meat off her biscuit and carried it in her bare hand back to the classroom. This was too much for me! I explained that I will no longer be taking food gifts that are not individually wrapped.

Harsh? I hope not, but there was no way I was going to eat that piece of sausage! And I was scared to see what she might bring in the next day......

Funny story! There is always a good story when you are a teacher! Congrats on almost being done with med school. Does your husband know what he wants to do a residency in? Mine finishes ortho this year -then 1 year of fellowship in Ohio. We should get together sometime after all this bedrest stuff! Where do you guys go to church?

that is hillarious. good rule to have--no unwrapped food. i never accepted anything from my 7th graders. you NEVER know what they've done to it!

Chris Anne-- I would NEVER have taken something from my 7th and 8th graders either! You are so right- they would do who knows what to it!

Courtney-- Brad is going to do a family medicine residency and then possibly a geriatrics fellowship. We are so ready to be done... and get a paycheck! :) We go to Siwell Road c of c in Byram. We definitely need to get together after your bedrest!

I can only imagine the look on your face when out came a big slap of meat :)

Oh I saw some fall window decals in Hobby Lobby yesterday and thought of you and our dorm days. It made me miss you more.

That is hilarious, Angie! I don't know if I would have been able to even fake a smile to mask the look of horror on my face if I were given a sausage patty - unwrapped. Congrats on Brad being so close to finishing Med School. I just recently received my first paycheck after 7+ years of no income. It's awesome!!! I'm excited for you guys.
